History

Astra is now a 23 meter customised polar expedition yacht with highest ice class and ice breaking capabilities. The owner has put extensie efforts in converting her not only for long range polar trips around the north but also for crossing the Atlantic ocean and cruising the Caribbean. The whole ship now has AC in all areas including the engine room, water maker and new high-end technology rotating stabilizers. For a vessel this size this makes all the difference in the North Sea and crossing the Atlantic. During her voyage down to Portugal from The Netherlands she sailed thru the English Channel and Bay of Biscay where there were 4-5 meter waves going passed unnoticed. Coffee cups stayed firm on the table and the passengers could get on with their normal activities. The vessel was only moving steady slightly up and down without rolling side to side.

In Sweden there are no direct "ice classes". Ice class is more a question of insurance levels in different waters than a measure of the ship's ability to make way and break ice. The Norwegian 75-footers rescue vessels have ice class C for the most part, but they are no good to go in ice. What determines whether a ship can break ice is three factors. Hull shape, weight and horsepower. A special s form on the bow is required for the ship to climb the ice and break it. The Norwegian rounder shape pushes the ice rather than breaking if it is thick and hard ice. Likewise, hull sides must be shaped for ice-going in order for the ship to swing and go back in ice. If the sides are straight, she just goes straight ahead. It should preferably be single propeller. Then the propeller will usually come down a bit. It is protected in a way other than dobble propellers that comes far out on the sides and further up. The ship must have some kind of cooling system that does not get full of ice and loses cooling in the ice sludge. The rudder must be constructed so that it does not get destroyed when you go back in the ice. Additionally, there are other things like steel thickness, medium frame spacing in the bow,shaft dimension etc. Astra has all this and more. You will not find any ship in this area that is better in the ice. There is also a difference between different types of ice. In salty waters and the ice i frozen it will be softer than freshwater ice. The big problem is usually not to break the ice but when the winds are strong and pushes the ice together and becomes "ice walls" they can quickly become one meter tall and two feet deep even though the ice is only 30 cm. Dag Pike recently wrote a report in PassageMaker Magazine about Astra. He is one of the most knowledgeable in the field of polar water and extreme navigation situations.

Newly painted white deck to keep the temperature in warmer climates. Fore deck with water jet dinghy, hydraulic crane and anchor winch. Entrance on the starboard side to the engine room and the lounge. Lounge and galley on the main deck. AIn the aft there is a cabin and on port side entrance to the engine room. Up to the bridge, shower and toilet facilities and down to the lower deck. All appliances are newly purchased as well as interior and an oak floor. Air conditioning system in all areas.

A cabin on the port side on the main deck with exit to the aft deck. On the starboard side there is a room with a new washer and dryer and wine cooling fridge. Entrance to the engine room and to the main lounge.

Fore on the lower deck there is a lounge, newly built toilet facility with shower and toilet and 4 double cabins.

Bridge deck with newly built Portuguese bridge that you can walk around the bridge deck with entrance to the bridge on the starboard side and aft. Control panel for the deck crane, new outboard for the new Zodiac boat.

The bridge with brand new Furuno navigation system. 2 radar, NMEA network, Furuno Blackbox and Time Zero. New Hatteland screens where you can choose which information will be displayed from both systems. Sofa with a table and steering position with engine control aft. MagnusMaster stabilizers control panel.

On the way down to the engine room. Switchboard, an Onan generator and one of the 4 installed stabilizers. 2 boxes with switch for stabilizers and control panel on the bridge.

The engine room with a reliable Mitsubishi main engine and Volvo auxiliary engine. Hydraulic system, pumps, new separator, boiler, shaft generator and compressors. Propulsion through main engine but also hydraulically separate system powered by Volvo engine on the shaft, stamped with DnV. Ultrasonic NRG SH-2 Sonihull system integrated in the hull to prevent groth.

Aft of the engine room include a workshop and newly installed water maker plant that does 250 l / h, new AC cooling system, new lathe and spare parts. Aft of the workshop is the steering room and storage.

Fore peak, sandblasted and painted.
